Abstract

This study aims to compare the two prominent species of the Cymbopogon citratus and Cymbopogon nardus in terms of their morphological characteristics, phytochemical composition, bioactivity, and industrial utility. While previous research has explored each species independently, comprehensive comparative studies remain limited. This study bridges that gap by synthesizing findings from multiple primary sources to examine their differences in essential oil content, biological activities, and functional applications. Qualitative data were analyzed from phytochemical screenings, antioxidant and antimicrobial assays, and literature reviews. Results reveal that C. citratus possesses a higher citral concentration, contributing to superior antioxidant and broad-spectrum antimicrobial effects, while C. nardus contains higher levels of citronellal and geraniol, enhancing its insect-repellent and antifungal properties. The study also highlights their distinct industrial roles, with C. citratus favoring culinary and medicinal use, and C. nardus predominantly employed in pest control and aromatherapy. These findings offer new insights into the species-specific benefits and potential applications of Cymbopogon, supporting informed selection in cultivation, extraction, and product development strategies across pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries.
