Abstract

Entrepreneurship education in Indonesian madrasahs is increasingly delivered through vocational skills programs, yet it remains unclear how such programs turn technical competence into entrepreneurial character. This study examines the effect of a culinary skills program and the supervisor role on students' entrepreneurial spirit, with entrepreneurial motivation as a mediating variable, at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri (MAN) Luwu Timur, Indonesia. A quantitative, causal-associative design was employed. Data were collected from 120 respondents, comprising 72 active students and 48 alumni of the culinary skills program selected through purposive sampling, using a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire, and were analyzed with Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results show that the culinary skills program has no significant direct effect on entrepreneurial spirit (β = 0.169; p = 0.084), whereas the supervisor role has a significant direct effect (β = 0.244; p = 0.008). Both the culinary skills program (β = 0.338; p < 0.001) and the supervisor role (β = 0.271; p = 0.007) significantly increase entrepreneurial motivation, which in turn significantly affects entrepreneurial spirit (β = 0.304; p < 0.001). Entrepreneurial motivation fully mediates the effect of the culinary skills program (indirect effect = 0.103; p = 0.012) and partially mediates the effect of the supervisor role (indirect effect = 0.082; p = 0.037). These findings indicate that technical skills foster entrepreneurial spirit only when they first strengthen motivation, while supervisors exert a dual influence, both directly and through motivation. Madrasahs should integrate skills training with deliberate motivation-building strategies and invest in the capacity of program supervisors.
