Political Framing on the Screen: Media Construction of East Java Gubernatorial Election 2024 News by Metro TV
Abstract
This research aims to analyze the framing of Metro TV's reporting on three pairs of candidates for Governor and Deputy Governor of East Java during the 2024 regional elections registration period. Using Pan & Kosicki's (1993) framing analysis model, this research examines the syntactic, script, thematic, and rhetorical structures in Metro TV's reporting in the period 28–29 August 2024. The research results show that the pair of Khofifah–Emil obtains a framing as a competent pair and has a religious image, with visual support, symbolic narrative, and high display intensity. In contrast, the Risma–Gus Hans pair is framed as a pair that focuses on a clean and nationalist bureaucracy neutrally and functionally, without strengthening narratives or meaningful political symbols. Meanwhile, the pair of Luluk–Lukman experiences marginal framing, characterized by minimal exposure. This pair is framed as a pair with minimum competence. There are differences in Metro TV frames for the three candidate pairs for the Governor and Deputy Governor of East Java.
