Abstract

The rapid growth of e-commerce has increased the accessibility of online shopping and encouraged consumptive behavior among university students. This condition may develop into online shopping addiction, characterized by compulsive buying behavior, difficulty controlling purchasing urges, and negative financial and psychological consequences. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the token economy technique in controlling online shopping addiction among university students in the e-commerce era. The study employed a quantitative experimental approach using a One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The participants consisted of 30 university students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Online Shopping Addiction Scale (OSAS), which consists of 18 items measuring six dimensions of online shopping addiction. Data analysis was conducted using the Paired Sample t-Test with IBM SPSS Statistics 26. The results indicated that the mean score for online shopping addiction decreased from 68.73 in the pretest to 30.50 in the posttest. Furthermore, the Paired Sample t-Test revealed a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores, t(29) = 30.277, p < .001. These findings demonstrate that the token economy technique is effective in reducing online shopping addiction among university students. Practically, this inter s can be utilized as an alternative behavioral strategy to enhance self-control and reduce excessive online shopping behavior among students.
