The Urgency of Digital Simulation Media in Probability Learning: A Literature Review
Abstract
Based on the comprehensive literature review examining the urgency of digital simulation media in probability education, this study synthesizes empirical evidence from 67 scholarly works published between 2020 and 2026. Probability constitutes one of the most abstract branches of mathematics, presenting substantial challenges including persistent misconceptions, low conceptual mastery, and mathematical anxiety among learners. This review analyzes the taxonomy, effectiveness, and implementation factors of digital simulation tools—including virtual manipulatives, PhET Interactive Simulations, game-based environments, data visualization platforms, and programming environments—across specific probability concepts. The findings demonstrate medium-to-large positive effects on conceptual understanding (d = 0.89), stochastic reasoning (d = 0.82), and misconception reduction (d = 0.94), with pedagogical facilitation identified as the strongest predictor of success. The proposed Dynamic Simulation Integration Framework (DSIF) articulates four interconnected dimensions: representational fidelity, pedagogical scaffolding, conceptual sequencing, and contextual grounding. However, significant challenges including the digital divide, inadequate teacher preparation, and assessment misalignment constrain widespread implementation. This study concludes that digital simulation media represent an essential pedagogical imperative for making abstract probability concepts experientially accessible, aligned with constructivist learning paradigms and digital transformation imperatives of Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0.
