Abstract

Reading comprehension and writing skills are essential components of English language learning; however, many junior high school students continue to experience difficulties in developing these skills. Therefore, appropriate instructional media are needed to enhance students' engagement and learning outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the effect of using the movie Up as a learning medium on the reading comprehension and writing skills of eighth-grade students at SMPN 34 Pekanbaru. This research employed a quasi-experimental design involving 74 students divided into an experimental group and a control group. Data were collected through reading comprehension and writing tests administered as pre-tests and post-tests. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Kolmogorov–Smirnov normality test, Levene's Test of Homogeneity, and the Independent Samples t-test. The findings revealed that students in the experimental group achieved significantly higher post-test scores than those in the control group. The Independent Samples t-test indicated a significant effect of using the movie Up on students' reading comprehension and writing skills (p < .05). These findings suggest that the movie Up is an effective learning medium for improving students' reading comprehension and writing skills. Therefore, English teachers are encouraged to integrate English movies into classroom instruction to create a more engaging and meaningful learning environment.
