Abstract

The research results show that essential oils from nutmeg seeds, clove flowers, and cinnamon bark at concentrations of 10–20% are very effective in inhibiting the growth of leaf moss. Meanwhile, for crustose lichens, only clove flower essential oil has proven to be very effective, while nutmeg seed and cinnamon bark essential oils are less effective. Thus, essential oils, particularly clove essential oil, have the potential to be used as natural materials for the conservation of stone cultural heritage sites thru the control of moss growth. This finding shows that the utilization of essential oils from local spice plants not only supports the preservation efforts of cultural heritage sites but also provides a more environmentally friendly conservation alternative compared to the use of synthetic chemicals. The use of essential oils from cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon can be a sustainable solution in maintaining the physical condition of the historic fort in Ternate City, while also enhancing the value of utilizing local biological resources as part of a sustainable cultural heritage conservation strategy
