Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology and social media has contributed to the increasing prevalence of consumptive behavior among Generation Z university students. The convenience of online shopping through e-commerce platforms and continuous exposure to social media trends encourage purchasing decisions based on desires rather than actual needs. This study aimed to examine the effects of self-control and Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) on consumptive behavior among Generation Z students at Universitas Buana Perjuangan Karawang. This study employed a quantitative approach with a causal research design. A total of 402 students were selected using a convenience sampling technique. Data were collected using the Consumptive Behavior Scale, the Indonesian version of the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS) and the Fear of Missing Out Scale (FoMOS). Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression with IBM SPSS Statistics version 26. The results showed that self-control had a significant negative effect on consumptive behavior (β = −0.250, t = −9.371, p < .001), whereas FoMO had a significant positive effect on consumptive behavior (β = 0.734, t = 27.513, p < .001). Simultaneously, self-control and FoMO significantly predicted consumptive behavior (F = 779.399, p < .001), with an Adjusted R² of 0.795, indicating that both variables explained 79.5% of the variance in consumptive behavior. Additional analyses revealed significant differences in consumptive behavior based on gender and unplanned purchase history, but no significant difference based on employment status. These findings suggest that self-control and FoMO are important determinants of consumptive behavior among Generation Z university students. Therefore, enhancing self-control and reducing FoMO may serve as effective strategies to minimize consumptive behavior
